Dead batteries end deployments quietly. Before the next activation, run your load through the field power hub — battery runtime, system sizer, and solar sizing tools work offline. Operators who skip math discover the failure at 0200 local when the HT beeps low battery and the hotspot has already dropped.
Build a load table first
List every device: main radio, spare HT, phone, Meshtastic node, LED light, small inverter if used. For each, note receive current, transmit current, and hours of expected use per operational period. The system sizer aggregates this into amp-hours — your single most important number before buying batteries.
Quick rules that survive field use
- Add 25% margin to calculated amp-hours — cold weather and aging cells lie.
- LiFePO₄ allows deeper discharge than SLA — same label Ah is not the same usable energy.
- Separate transmit and receive duty cycles; HF mobile at 100 W is not the same load as FM HT listening on a net.
- Charge logistics matter: car adapter, solar, and grid before departure — document all three in go-kit checklist.
Solar as sustainment, not magic
Solar extends multi-day incidents when sized honestly. Use the solar sizing tool with local sun hours for winter — Appalachian winter sun is not summer camp solar math. A 100 W panel cannot run a 50 A·h load overnight if the battery started half empty.
Go-kit power layout

Vehicle power as bridge

When three operators share one battery hub, schedule transmit-heavy tasks so two can receive while one runs HF phone. After-action power review
After every drill, note actual ending voltage and compare to prediction. Adjust the spreadsheet in system sizer until predictions match reality within 15%. That calibration is what separates guesswork from engineering.
