Why this book exists
This guide walks complete beginners through ham radio, GMRS, and LoRa/Meshtastic mesh networking — what they are, which ones you actually need, how to get licensed, what equipment to buy first, and how to build a communications plan that works when modern systems fail. Ham radio offers global reach with a simple license. GMRS gives your family local voice coordination with no exam. Meshtastic adds long-range, solar-powered text messaging over a decentralized mesh — no license required for basic use.
This book grew directly out of the channel. After Hurricane Helene tore through western North Carolina and East Tennessee in the fall of 2024, cell service and internet were down across entire counties for days, and in some places weeks. Neighbors who had a handheld radio, a mesh node, and a plan could reach each other and coordinate; neighbors who didn't, couldn't. That gap — between people who were ready and people who weren't — is the reason this book and the KI4TQN channel exist.
It's written for three kinds of readers: preppers and homesteaders who want a working off-grid communications plan, families who need a reliable way to stay in touch during a storm or grid outage, and curious beginners who've been wanting to get into ham radio or mesh tech but didn't know where to start. No prior radio experience is assumed anywhere in the book.
