General unlocks most HF phone and data segments — 160 through 10 meters with specific band limits. That enables regional HF nets, NVIS, and Winlink emcomm paths Technician cannot use for voice.

Do I need Extra for emcomm?

No. Most ARES and SKYWARN work is VHF/UHF on Technician; General adds HF contingency. Extra adds 60 m and full HF segments — valuable but not required for most deployments.
