Not everyone has time to watch every upload. Here are plain-language summaries of two recent channel videos — the points worth knowing even if you only read this post.

Off-grid DMR — digital radio when the grid is down

Video: Solar Powered Emergency Wi-Fi DMR Hotspot That Runs Indefinitely (June 15, 2026)

A comment claimed "DMR dies when the power goes out." The video is a live demonstration proving the opposite — with the right infrastructure, digital modes keep working off-grid.

The chain shown:

  • Power from a vehicle (no wall outlet)
  • Raspberry Pi running a Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Starlink for internet backhaul
  • DMR radio connecting through the hotspot into the wider network

The takeaway: Digital radio does not fail because it is digital. It fails when your supporting infrastructure fails — no power, no IP path, no hotspot. Build redundancy (battery, solar, alternate backhaul) and DMR remains viable in an outage.

This is PACE thinking in practice: your primary might be cell; your alternate might be local repeaters; your contingency might be simplex; your emergency might be a self-contained hotspot plus satellite backhaul. One layer is never enough.
