Lightning Safety Reference

When to stop operating and seek shelter in the field.

30/30 rule

  • 30 seconds — if thunder follows lightning by less than 30 s, suspend outdoor radio ops.
  • 30 minutes — wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming field antennas.

Field safety

  • Disconnect antennas and power when storms approach.
  • Never hold a mast or metal pole during lightning.
  • Seek enclosed shelter — not under isolated trees.
  • Portable ops: use low tripod masts, not tower climbs in weather.

Common questions

How do I protect field antennas from lightning?

Disconnect and ground when not in use — no gadget replaces unplugging during storms.
