Lightning Safety Reference
When to stop operating and seek shelter in the field.
30/30 rule
- 30 seconds — if thunder follows lightning by less than 30 s, suspend outdoor radio ops.
- 30 minutes — wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming field antennas.
Field safety
- Disconnect antennas and power when storms approach.
- Never hold a mast or metal pole during lightning.
- Seek enclosed shelter — not under isolated trees.
- Portable ops: use low tripod masts, not tower climbs in weather.
