Surviving Your First Ham Net
Your first net check-in is scarier in your head than on the air. Net control has heard every mistake. This checklist keeps you from stepping on traffic or transmitting out of license.
Before the net
- Program the net frequency and verify offset/tone — local guide or club sheet
- Charge the radio; know your power setting (start low on repeaters)
- Have paper for notes; open phonetic quiz if you rust on letters
- Read net control reference so you recognize roll call and traffic language
During the net
- Listen for at least one full net cycle before transmitting.
- When NCS calls for check-ins, say your callsign phonetically once — wait.
- If acknowledged, give name, location (city/county), and whether you have traffic — then stop.
- Never comment under emergency or priority traffic; use “break break” only for urgent safety traffic per training.

After the net, log practice in your QSO log or journal what confused you — that is how you improve by net three.
Before the net starts
Program your radio the day before — not ten minutes before net time. Verify offset, tone, and timeout timer. Charge battery and bring a spare. Write your callsign phonetically on tape if you are nervous.
Listening period
Listen one full net cycle before you transmit. Note how NCS takes check-ins, whether they want location or only call, and how traffic is passed. Copy the net script format from net script generator.
Checking in
Wait for NCS to invite check-ins. Key once, state callsign clearly using phonetics, add “no traffic” or location if requested, then release. Do not narrate your life story — nets are transactional.
If you are nervous
Practice on simplex with a friend first. Attend SKYWARN or club training nets listed on East TN emcomm hub before emergency nets.
After the net
Log what confused you. Update CHIRP labels. Add net to kit maintenance calendar quarterly.
