First Mobile Install Checklist

Your first mobile install should take an afternoon, not ten minutes at a cigarette plug. Most “my mobile is deaf” complaints trace to power, ground, or coax — not the radio. Use this checklist before you rely on the truck for SKYWARN, ARES, or family GMRS.

Before you drill

1. Pick the radio class — mobile guides for ham, GMRS, or DMR
2. Read HT vs mobile so you are solving the right problem
3. Gather fuse holder, wire, coax, mount, and programming cable

12V power (do this once, do it right)

• Fuse at the battery or bus bar — not only at the plug adapter
• Size wire for length and peak current — wire gauge tool
• Ground negative lead properly; RF ground strap for mag mounts on composite bodies
• Separate radio power from cheap inverter noise (Starlink, chargers)
• Consider Anderson Powerpole or fused distro block at the radio

Antenna and coax

• Best: center-roof NMO on steel — see placement guide
• Budget: mag mount on steel roof with grounding strap if needed
• Keep coax short; calculate loss — coax loss calculator
• Dual-band antenna for ham; dedicated GMRS antenna for MXT-class radios

SWR and ERP

Check SWR on every band you will transmit on before storm season. Notes in SWR tool. Estimate real-world radiated power with ERP calculator — ERP is what matters on the repeater, not sticker wattage.

Programming

• Clone memories from your HT where bands overlap — CHIRP cheat sheet
• Label channels to match ICS-205 or family printed card
• GMRS: confirm license active and tones match GMRS card

Document the layer

Add vehicle mobile as Primary or Alternate in PACE. Pack spare fuse, SWR note, and programming cable in go-kit checklist. When vehicle coverage still fails at home, plan base station next — not a third handheld.
