HT vs Mobile for Property Owners
Property owners often buy a second handheld when the first one “does not reach the barn.” Sometimes that works. Often the problem is ERP — effective radiated power — not the radio brand. A 5 W rubber duck inside a truck cab is still a handheld path. A 25–40 W mobile with a roof antenna is a different layer entirely.
What handhelds do well

Handheld limits show up fast in Appalachian terrain: hills block UHF, metal buildings attenuate signal, and battery fatigue ends long incident days. If your weak spot is driving the property or holding a net from a vehicle, another HT rarely fixes it.
What mobile adds
- More power: 25–80 W typical vs 0.5–5 W HT
- Better antenna: roof NMO or mag mount vs rubber duck inside cab
- Net control from truck: SKYWARN and ARES activations where NCS runs mobile

GMRS mobile fits licensed family voice without an exam — ranch routes, farm trucks, repeaters. Ham mobile fits SKYWARN, ARES, and club nets on 2m/70cm. Many estates run both in separate PACE layers. Do not assume one radio covers staff, family, and served-agency traffic.
Document it in PACE
Cell is often Primary. Vehicle mobile might be Alternate. Simplex HT or Meshtastic text might be Contingency. HF or satellite is Emergency. Write it down in the PACE planner so nobody guesses channels when Primary fails.
When mobile still is not enough
Fixed base antennas beat mobile ERP for home net control. Regional outages need HF contingency — base station guides and the HF emcomm bundle. The upgrade ladder is HT → mobile → base/HF, not “more of the same HT.”
