Logging Your First NVIS Contact

First NVIS success is repeatable when you log variables — not just “it worked once.” Use this structure in QSO log or a notebook.

Minimum log fields

  • UTC time and band (e.g., 40m phone)
  • Antenna type and approximate height
  • Power and mode
  • Station worked and RST both ways
  • Distance estimate and terrain note (ridge, valley)

What emcomm cares about

Could you pass a short welfare message? Did the net control acknowledge you within two calls? If not, note receive-only conditions — that drives antenna or power changes before storm season.

Next practice

Schedule monthly NVIS on the same band/time. Compare with propagation tool predictions. Upgrade path: General operator hub · HF emcomm bundle.
