FT8 for Weak-Signal Emcomm Coordination

FT8 is a weak-signal digital mode — 15-second exchanges, not ragchew. For emcomm, treat it as a propagation probe and schedule confirmation layer, not a replacement for Winlink message traffic or voice nets.

When FT8 helps

• Confirm HF path to a known station before opening Winlink or phone patch
• Coordinate sked times on marginal bands during solar minimum
• Practice digital discipline with FT8 reference alongside propagation advisor

When FT8 does not help

Real-time tactical traffic, shelter check-ins, and served-agency messaging need voice or formal message forms (radiogram, ICS-213, Winlink templates). FT8 cannot carry that payload.

PACE placement

List FT8 as Contingency test only in PACE — document band, time, and station callsign used for skeds. After confirmation, shift to Winlink or voice per plan.

Practice path

1. Run propagation and NVIS for band pick.
2. Make three FT8 QSOs on chosen band; log in QSO log.
3. Attempt Winlink from same site via Winlink workflow.
4. Record which path worked in incident drill export.
