HF NVIS for Appalachian Property & Emcomm

In rolling terrain, VHF/UHF repeaters and handhelds fail for the same reason cell does — hills block line of sight. Near Vertical Incident Skywave (NVIS) uses HF radiated almost straight up to return within a few hundred miles. That is regional emcomm, not DX contesting.

When NVIS is the right Contingency layer

  • County-wide or multi-county outages when repeaters are down
  • Property owners with General+ license and wire antenna space
  • Liaison to statewide HF nets — East TN HF guide

Band and time

Use the NVIS advisor and propagation tool — 40m and 80m dominate night/day regional paths in Tennessee. Log practice monthly, not storm day one.

Antenna reality

Inverted-V or dipole between trees often outperforms a vertical on 40m for NVIS. Size wire with antenna calculator. Pair with mobile VHF for local voice while HF handles regional.
