Mesh nodes carry short text — not voice. Use them as a Contingency or Alternate layer when cell fails and you need status between buildings, gates, and remote corners.

Placement checklist

  1. Elevation wins — attic, pole, or ridge node often matters more than transmitter power.
  2. Power budget — solar USB on remote nodes; log maintenance in kit maintenance.
  3. Roles — who carries a mobile node vs fixed relay? Document in PACE.
  4. Test messages — weekly “mesh check” text beats discovering dead nodes in an outage.
  5. Voice layer — mesh does not replace GMRS/ham for real-time coordination.
