Baofeng / BTECH Cheat Sheet

The Baofeng UV-5R-class HT is the most common first radio in East Tennessee. This cheat sheet is the menu and key map for repeater memories — stay on frequencies you are licensed for.

Before you transmit

  • Set STEP to 5 kHz (GMRS) or 2.5/5 kHz as needed
  • Confirm TXP — Low for FRS/simplex tests, High only when legal (GMRS licensed)
  • Program R-CTCS / T-CTCS separately for repeater access
  • Enable TOT (time-out timer) — 60–180 s recommended
  • Disable VOX unless intentional

Programming a UV-5R without tears

Use CHIRP over the keypad whenever you can — see the CHIRP cheat sheet. Menu 13 (T-CTCS) is transmit tone, Menu 11 (R-CTCS) is receive tone. Menu 25 (SFT-D) is offset direction, Menu 26 (OFFSET) is the split. Menu 0 (SQL) too high will hide weak repeaters in the valleys.

Legal notes: a UV-5R can transmit outside ham and GMRS allocations. Stay on frequencies you are licensed for (Part 97 amateur or Part 95 GMRS with a GMRS-certified radio). A UV-5R is not a certified GMRS transmitter. For GMRS, use a type-accepted radio; for ham, Technician privileges start on 2 m / 70 cm.

Common questions

Can I use a Baofeng on GMRS?

Many Baofeng models are ham-only — verify FCC certification before GMRS transmit.

What is the difference between RX and TX tone?

RX tone opens your speaker; TX tone opens the repeater — both must match the repeater listing.

Why is my UV-5R silent on a repeater?

Usually wrong offset, missing CTCSS, or squelch too high. Confirm the memory against local.php, then listen on the output with CSQ.

Should a UV-5R be my only radio?

It is a fine learner and backup. A cleaner receiver (or a mobile with a roof antenna) is the upgrade that actually adds range in the ridges.
