ReferenceWhen is a handheld enough, and when do you need a mobile?
Buy a handheld first to learn and to walk the property. Add a vehicle mobile when you need East Tennessee acreage, highway coverage, or a net-control radio that will not overheat. The difference is mostly antenna height and duty cycle, not the brand on the faceplate.

Start with an HT, then measure
A Technician or a new GMRS household should own a handheld in week one. Program East TN memories from the frequency guide, walk the property, and note where the repeater drops. That walk tells you whether a mag-mount will fix it or whether you need a real mobile and a roof hole.

Put both on the PACE plan
Primary might be cell. Alternate is often a GMRS HT in the kitchen. Contingency is the ham or GMRS mobile in the truck. Emergency is 146.520 simplex with the mag-mount. Document it on the PACE planner and copy channels to ICS-205.
Handheld vs mobile — common questions
Is a handheld enough for East Tennessee emcomm?
An HT is enough to learn, walk a site, and check into a strong local repeater from a ridge. It is usually not enough inside a vehicle cab or across a farm in the valleys. Add a mobile or a mag-mount for the HT when the property or commute is the job.
Why does a 50 W mobile outperform a 5 W HT so much?
Most of the gain is the antenna, not the watts. A roof NMO or mag-mount sits in the clear; a rubber duck is at chest height and detuned by the body and the cab. ERP (see the ERP calculator) is power × antenna gain minus feedline loss.
Can I run a handheld as a mobile?
Yes with a speaker mic and a mag-mount on 19 inches of coax, on low or mid power so you do not overheat the HT. It is a valid Alternate layer. A dedicated mobile still wins on duty cycle and receive performance.
GMRS mobile or ham mobile first?
GMRS mobile if the users are family or staff without exams. Ham mobile if the operator is licensed and the nets are SKYWARN, ARES, or club 2 m. Many trucks run both — see GMRS vs ham mobile.
