POTA & Portable HF — Minimal Field Kit

Portable HF teaches skills that translate directly to emcomm — antenna setup, power budgeting, and reading band conditions. Parks on the Air (POTA) is structured practice with community support; you do not need to chase awards to benefit from the field discipline.

Start at the POTA field kit bundle: POTA reference, antenna calculator, propagation advisor, and QSO log. For NVIS regional work, add the NVIS advisor and HF emcomm bundle.

Minimal HF field kit

  • Transceiver with internal battery or 12 V feed and fuse
  • End-fed or linked dipole with known resonance on at least 40 and 20 m
  • Coax short as practical — losses eat portable ERP
  • Notebook or QSO log for UTC contacts
  • Phone with propagation apps as advisory only — verify on air

Power and weight

Run the battery runtime tool for your radio at transmit duty cycle you actually use. POTA activations are bursty; emcomm nets may be 50% listen / 50% transmit during check-ins. Size for the worse case.

NVIS for regional emcomm practice

Tennessee regional nets often need NVIS, not DX skywave. Antenna height near 1/10 wavelength changes the pattern dramatically. Use NVIS advisor before you cut wire in the park — same math applies at a shelter parking lot.

Logging and after-action

Every portable activation should produce a log — calls, time, band, RST. When you transition to served-agency work, that habit becomes ICS-214 entries. Export CSV from the QSO log for your records.

From POTA to deployment mindset

  1. Activate monthly on a band your local net uses for HF contingency.
  2. Practice setup in rain and wind — not only sunny park days.
  3. Add Winlink send from the same site via Winlink workflow.
  4. Document the site as Alternate in PACE if it reliably hits the RMS you need.

Weather and site safety

Portable ops attract lightning attention on open summits. Have a bail plan — trees, vehicle shelter, no antenna work during active cells. SKYWARN training applies to you as an operator, not only as a spotter.

Interaction with public land rules

POTA encourages legal field operation; still follow park hours, wire antenna placement rules, and noise expectations. Emcomm field sites may not be parks — but the same courtesy applies at shelter parking lots.

Connecting practice to Winlink

After a successful POTA CW or phone activation, attempt a Winlink session from the same location via Winlink workflow. Note RMS gateway, time, and failure modes. That single data point informs whether the site belongs in PACE as HF Alternate.

Gear rotation

Alternate two antenna configurations so you know which deploys faster in rain. Log wear items — coax connectors, mast sections — in kit maintenance alongside emcomm HT checks.

This site is built for operators who practice before the storm. Bookmark the deployment workflow, install the PWA once on Wi‑Fi, and run the same drill quarterly. Offline tools only help if you opened them at least once while online — cache what you will need when LTE is gone.

East Tennessee operators should keep regional net times in the same note app as family emergency contacts. When the next wind event arrives, you will not have time to search PDFs for PL tones.
