Install GMRS mobile when the passengers are family or staff who will not take a ham exam. Install ham mobile when the driver is licensed and the nets are SKYWARN, ARES, or club 2 m. Ranches often run both radios on one PACE document — different licenses, different nets, one roof.

GMRS mobile is the household layer
Staff at a barn, a spouse in the other vehicle, and teenagers on the property can all talk on GMRS once the household license is granted. Program NETNRC pairs from GMRS Tennessee and the channel tool. Tuesday 7 PM SKYWARN GMRS net is the weekly on-air practice.
Ham mobile is the emcomm layer

Two antennas, one PACE row
A dual-band ham NMO and a GMRS UHF NMO can share a roof if you space them. Document GMRS as Alternate and ham as Contingency (or the reverse) on the PACE planner. Need encrypted business channels? That is Part 90 private radio — amateur and GMRS cannot do it.

Can one radio do GMRS and ham mobile?
A ham mobile must stay on amateur frequencies. A GMRS mobile must be Part 95 certified and stay on GMRS. Dual-service “do everything” radios are usually not legal on GMRS. Two radios, or a ham mobile plus a GMRS mobile, is the clean setup.
Which license is faster?
GMRS: $35, no exam, covers the household. Ham mobile: Technician exam, then 2 m / 70 cm privileges. Extra class is not required for VHF/UHF mobile work.

Do I need encryption for ranch staff?
Amateur and GMRS cannot encrypt. If you need private business channels, that is Part 90 — see the Part 90 private radio page. PACE still lists GMRS/ham as contingency when Part 90 is down.
