- Do not transmit into a dummy load on high power indoors — UV-5R PA sections overheat quickly.
- 12V car charging cables exist; fuse at the radio end and avoid cheap lighter adapters.
Avoid these on day one
- Transmitting on repeater output frequency — always program offset correctly.
- Wideband (W) vs narrowband (N) — most ham FM is wideband; mismatch sounds “underwater”.
- Keying up over emergency or SKYWARN traffic — listen first, use net control procedures.

If you need reliable vehicle coverage across hilly East TN property, a 25–50 W mobile with a roof antenna often outperforms a 5 W HT with a rubber duck. Upgrade when you are driving nets, covering acreage from a truck, or hitting repeaters that are marginal on HT power.
